Intractable Hemolytic Anemia after Heart Valve Surgery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Heart valve surgery consists of valve replacement and repair. Both operations have been standard strategies for treating heart valve diseases worldwide, and are associated with excellent long-term clinical results. Hemolytic anemia after heart valve surgery, however, is a troublesome complication related to implanted prosthetic valves or rings.

Hemolytic Anemia after Aortic Valve Replacement: a Case Report.
Hemolytic anemia is exceedingly rare and an underestimated complication after aortic valve replacement (AVR).The mechanism responsible for hemolysis most commonly involves a regurgitated flow or jet that related to paravalvar leak or turbulence of subvalvar stenosis. It appears to be independent of its severity as assessed by echocardiography. We present a case of a 24-year-old man with a histo...

BACKGROUND Significant paravalvular leak (PVL) after surgical valve replacement can result in intractable congestive heart failure and hemolytic anemia. Because repeat surgery is performed in only few patients, transcatheter reduction of PVL is emerging as an alternative option, but its safety and efficacy remain uncertain. In this study we sought to assess whether a successful transcatheter PV...
متن کاملA case of atrial septal defect complicated by autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
Open heart surgery is rarely performed on patients with heart disease complicated by autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) with the aid of an artificial heart-lung machine. We successfully performed radical open heart surgery on an atrial septal defect (ASD) patient with the complication of AIHA.
متن کاملSymptomatic Aortic Paravalvular Leak: Percutaneous Treatment with Amplatzer Vascular Plug III Device as an Alternative to Surgery
A significant prosthetic paravalvular leak is an uncommon and severe postsurgical complication correlated to the occurrence of congestive heart failure and hemolytic anemia. Percutaneous treatment has become an attractive and effective proposal to relieve symptoms and reduce complications in patients whose high rate of morbidity/mortality precludes a new surgery. This is the case of an 81-year-...
متن کاملLate device embolization in a persistent mitral paravalvular leak.
An 83-year-old man with severe organic mitral regurgitation underwent mitral valve surgery with implantation of a biologic prosthesis. Four months later he presented with hemolytic anemia and heart failure due to severe paravalvular regurgitation. Since the patient refused surgery, the paravalvular leak was closed percutaneously using two Amplatzer devices, with angiographic and clinical succes...
